Starlink has dropped one of its biggest hurdles for new UK customers, the initial £299 fee for buying the hardware…but there is a catch! (There’s always a catch).
The Elon Musk-backed satellite broadband provider now offers a 12-month residential plan with zero upfront hardware cost, meaning households pay only the standard £75/month.
For rural and hard-to-reach areas, this could be a turning point. Many of these communities still face painfully slow internet or no service at all so this change could make Starlink a way more affordable option for people.
Faster, Wider, More Competitive
Typical Starlink speeds range from 100–280 Mbps download and 10–30 Mbps upload — often far faster than legacy rural connections. (We often see speeds above 300 Mbps in some of our installations) The change follows earlier UK pricing experiments, including a £15/month hardware rental scheme, but removing upfront costs entirely is the boldest move yet.
At Spacelink, we believe it could shake up the market a little bit: Satellite internet is no longer just a premium backup option. With lower pricing, it’s becoming a real competitor where fibre still hasn’t reached.
Nationwide Reach
Starlink’s UK service covers most of the country, excluding some high-demand areas, and can be installed where laying fibre is too expensive. Customers can also buy extra priority data or continue on reduced speeds after their allowance.
But here’s the catch….
It’s not available to the whole of the UK! Customers who find themselves located in current “high demand” areas will not be able to take advantage of this offer!

Is your area “high demand”?
We were able to get this exclusive illustration from Starlink that shows which areas are considered “high demand” and therefore are not able to take advantage of this offer.
You can also check on Starlink’s availability page, by entering your address and clicking through to the “order” page. You will see a little notification that you are in a high demand area.
But, if you are one of the lucky people that is in an any area where the offer applies, the £0 upfront plan is available now on Starlink’s UK website for residential customers committing to 12 months.
